Maggie Craven (Penelope)
At first, she just seems like an old, retired history teacher named Maggie Craven. But there's more to her than meets the eye...much more. She is the magna mater (Guardian Mother), the messenger sent by Selene to guide the daughters of the moon toward their destiny. They see her as a mentor and a confidant, but considering that, she tells them very little about herself. For instance, do they know she's immortal? If so, do they know how she came to be that way? Do they even know her real name?
Maggie, whose real name is Penelope, is 2,449 years old, and grew up with her father, a military officer of Ancient Athens, her younger sister, Taemestra, and her family's servants. No one ever believed she would marry, because even then, she was rather eccentric. Her mother disappeared mysteriously shortly after she was born, because her real father was Zeus, and Hera became jealous of her mother. It was Penelope's dream to be initiated into the order of Selene, but when she was fifteen years old, her whole life changed. That was when the Atrox came into her life, and so did her soulmate. She fell in love with a brave, handsome soldier named Hector, and would (and does) literally go to Hell and back for him. That was also when she became immortal, but failed to ask for perpetual youth.
Doomed to grow older for all eternity, Selene took pity on Penelope and gave her a potion that would reverse the aging process. She loves to drink it in front of people just to watch their astonished expressions. Having lost her only sister and her true love to the Atrox, and her friends and family to time and death, all she has left are the beloved daughters of the moon placed in her charge. And one-by-one, generation after generation, one way or another, she knows that she will lose each of them as well.
